Chris Munro has been an AMPS member since the Association began 35 years ago. Although early records are unclear it is estimated he has spent around half that time serving on AMPS Council.
Before AMPS was founded Chris attended a meeting of Sound Practitioners at DeLane Lea. The original intention of this meeting was to recruit people to BKSTS, but the mood changed during the meeting (led by Tony Anscombe) to that of forming a new sound guild. A subsequent meeting at Elstree Studios was the inaugural meeting of AMPS and present were (amongst others) Hugh Strain, Bob Allen, Gerry Humphries, Graham Hartstone, Trevor Pike, David Old, Mike Anscombe and Chris Munro.
An intention at those early meetings was to facilitate the sharing of information and experiences regarding the huge shift from linear to non-linear editing & digital sound. At that time Chris was a Production Sound Mixer on films and also a partner (with Dean Humphries) in a Sound Post company based at Twickenham Studios, set up to specialise in non-linear digital sound editing and mixing using DAR SoundStations. This placed Chris in an ideal position to promote a real collaboration between Production & Post Sound Mixers & Editors.
Creating and nurturing avenues of dialogue between colleagues is an asset Chris is well known for. He has also been instrumental over the last 15 years in creating a conduit for professional practice sharing between the UK's Production Sound Mixers, his mantra being that it makes sense for our technicians to see each other as colleagues rather than the previous tradition which was to treat each other as competition.
This forward thinking has had a tangible effect on the performance of UK Sound Mixers on the World stage and helped our community stay at the forefront of film making practises and technology by sharing workflows and strategies for the betterment of the craft.
To this day Chris keeps pushing our craft into modern times, always the first to volunteer and take part in any endeavours focusing on creating a happier, fairer and more welcoming workplace. He has also championed and taken an active part in committees and workgroups aimed at improving diversity and inclusivity in the Film Sound community.
Nothing mentioned so far references the incredible contribution Chris has made as a Production Sound Mixer. He has had a career spanning 55 years which continues to this day. He has collaborated with some of our most respected film makers including Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass, Ron Howard and Alfonso Cuaron.
Chris has been awarded two Oscars, the first in 2002 for “Black Hawk Down” and the second in 2014 for “Gravity.” He has been awarded two BAFTAs and has multiple nominations from both the Academy (three to date) and BAFTA (seven). Chris also won the first AMPS Film Sound Award and has two further nominations, plus a win and four nominations at the CAS Awards.
For his outstanding contribution to Film, the Sound Community and to AMPS, Chris Munro is awarded a Fellowship of the Association.
