Free Solo wins 2019 AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in Sound for a Factual Film
Izotope RX7 wins 2019 AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in a Hardware or Software product’· 
Killing Eve sound team accept their award for ‘Excellence in Sound for a Television Drama’

[London, UK] – On Friday 20th September, the Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS) announced, at a ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Soho, that the National Geographic documentary Free Solo had won the 2019 AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in Sound for a Factual Film’. Voted for exclusively by AMPS members, the award went to the 3 main heads of department within the documentary sound team:

·  Jim Hurst - Production Sound Mixer

·  Deborah Wallach - Supervising Sound Editor

·  Tom Fleischman – Re-recording Mixer

Upon accepting the award remotely, Emmy Award winner Deborah Wallach praised her team saying,

‘I feel both honoured and grateful for this recognition. I’d like to thank my talented sound team, Filipe, Roland, Nuno and Jim, and re-recording mixers Tom Fleischman and Ric Schnupp, who were essential in bringing this extraordinary film to life.’ 

Oscar winner Tom Fleischman also remarked,

‘I would like to send my deepest gratitude to AMPS for this Award.’

Building on the success at the AMPS Awards the Free Solo sound team continue to garner further industry recognition, most recently picking up 2 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Nonfiction Sound Mixing & Editing on Sunday night.

The second award presentation of the evening was the 2019 AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in a Hardware of Software Audio Product’ which was won by audio repair software suite, Izotope RX7.

Izotope Sales and Product Specialist Richard Morson accepted the award on behalf of the company stating that,

‘The development of RX7 was the culmination of a huge number of man-hours, incorporating a lot of feedback from our users and a new focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence. This award will mean a lot to the company as being recognised by the Post-Production community itself proves we’re heading in the right direction.’  

The final award presentation of the evening was to the sound team of Killing Eve who earlier in the year won the 2019 AMPS Award for ‘Excellence in Sound for a Television Drama’. Other notable attendees included 2019 Oscar and AMPS Film Award winners Nina Hartstone and John Warhurst who won trophies for Bohemian Rhapsody earlier in the year.

AMPS Chairman Rob Walker said of the event,

‘The AMPS Awards recognise and throw the spotlight entirely on the people and companies that make film and TV sound. I was honoured this evening to be able to present awards to some of the world’s best sound talent for producing soundtracks that have elevated every aspect of story, character, excitement, drama and performance.

I’m also pleased to see more productions nominated with women at the core of their creative sound teams. I hope this signals that overdue change is happening within our wider industry.’
